DECO'S TOP TIPS FOR A PERFECT SUMMER PICNIC!

Picnic table with food

The picnic is a quintessential warm weather tradition with roots stretching as far back as the 5th century. From a simple midday work break to the elegance of a refined Victorian era outing, quality time outdoors with friends and family has been a cultural staple across the world. So, with summer in full swing, now’s the time to start planning that spectacular seasonal sortie. Read on to discover DECO’s guide to 2022’s best summer picnic!

Right, let’s get straight into it shall we? When it comes to dishes and cutlery, steer away from paper, Styrofoam, and disposable plastics. Instead, opt for something more sustainable and reusable like melamine. They’re light, easy to carry, and definitely durable to handle whatever food and snacks you might want to bring. Better still, they’re often available in sets specifically designed for outdoor dining. Check out this 12-Piece Sojourn Melamine Set from CB2 for a good idea of what to look for, plus, it comes with its own wicker basket.

Which brings us to our next tip — food! Opt for something light and refreshing for a hot summer’s day, especially if you intend to have your picnic by the water. Salads are a fantastic choice as they tend to transport better than other dishes, and can be packed with all the essential nutrients and flavours you could ask for. Take a look at this handful of recipes for some great picnic inspiration. Many picnic areas on allow for the use of portable barbeques or even have them on-site — so if you just can’t seem to resist, go ahead and fire up some burgers and hotdogs on the grill. In addition, be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks to munch on throughout day.
Contrary to popular belief, a good picnic isn’t only about the food. For family and friends young and old, it’s always a good idea to bring some fun activities just in case the conversation starts to get a little stale. Enjoy a pastime that’s both elegant and timeless with this beautiful bocce ball set. Featuring two sets of solid resin balls, solid wood platform, and scorecard all in a canvas carrying bag, it’s the perfect activity for an outdoor picnic. In addition, you can never go wrong with classic games that are fun for the whole family. Check out this boutique oversized “Jenga” set with all-wood pieces from Holt Renfrew. Though not quite as easy to transport, this fan favourite will surely spark some laughter and maybe even a bit of friendly rivalry for a summer afternoon to remember.

No picnic would be complete without the inclusion of some good tunes, but great music can be pretty terrible if you don’t have the right speakers. We recommend Bluetooth speakers for their convenience, versatility, and portability. Forget the Aux cord and those silly adapters and instead indulge in the joy of wireless connectivity. This summer we’re really liking the Sonos Roam. Its bass-heavy design cuts through ambient noise outdoors, and boasts a whole load of features to explore in an ideal compact design.
Last but certainly not least is the iconic picnic staple. That is, a proper picnic blanket. When it comes to blankets, look for something large, light weight, and definitely stylish. We recommend this beautiful cotton pinstripe blanket. Coming in at 69” x 55” and featuring a removable carrying handle with Velcro straps, it’s the perfect accessory to any summer picnic — boasting the utmost of form and function.
